When to Choose Pin Header Sensors for Production Efficiency

Insights from 30 Years of Sensor Manufacturing

Over the past 30 years, Senseair has worked closely with customers developing everything from HVAC systems and indoor air quality monitors to gas leak detectors and alarms. One recurring topic in those conversations — especially when discussing production and assembly — is knowing when to use pre-mounted pin headers instead of soldering pin headers in own premises or using other custom mounting solutions.

More and more, we see a growing preference for pin header versions of sensors, especially for higher volume assembly lines. Based on real-world feedback and in-house production experience, here’s why pin headers are often the preferred choice — and in which situations they might not be the right fit.

What Is a Pin Header, and Why Does It Matter?

A pin header is a row of pins that plugs into a socket or is soldered into a PCB. With a pin header, sensors are easier to handle, align, and replace compared to non‑PH versions. While it’s a small component, whether or not to include it can have a significant influence on production efficiency, product quality, and long‑term maintenance.

When Pin Headers Make Sense

Consistent Assembly, Less Manual Handling

Sensors without pin headers require manual soldering of pin headers or custom mounting solutions. This is fine in low volumes but becomes time-consuming and error-prone at scale. Pin header versions, on the other hand, slot in more easily, reducing manual labour and variation between units, and so are often chosen for more standardised, rapid assembly.

Better for Automated Production Lines

Customers with automated assembly lines often prefer pin header versions because they allow faster, repeatable, high-precision installation. This reduces the risk of handling damage (such as bent pins or misalignment) and supports a scalable production process.

Reduced Costs

If your assembly line allows it, pre mounted pin headers generally results in savings in labour, reduces errors and allows for faster throughput.

Easier Prototyping and Serviceability

During prototyping or pilot runs, pin headers allow developers to swap out sensor modules without de-soldering, which speeds up testing and iteration. In field-deployable products, they can also make sensor servicing or replacement more straightforward — provided the product is designed with that in mind.

Senseair Products Available with Pin Header Options

Several of our sensors are available in PH (pin header) variants. These include:

  • Sunlight CO₂ PH
Two versions with slightly different pin header OAL (overall length) configurations:

    • 006-1-0101 — 13.46 mm
    • 006-1-0102 — 8.51 mm
Compact and low-power, ideal for battery-driven or portable applications.
  • S88 LP PH
    • 004-1-0103 — 11.54 mm
A robust option designed for fixed installations such as ventilation control and safety systems.
  • Sunlight R290 PH
    • 009-4-0006 — 8.51 mm
Developed for propane (R290) leak detection with a pin header format suitable for fast integration.
